WNBA player Brittney Griner was sentenced to 9 years in a Russian jail for drug smuggling after a highly politicized case since her arrest in February of this year.
In regards to the sentencing,
US President Joe Biden said the lengthy sentence was "unacceptable" and called on Russia for her immediate release.
The 31-year old is one of 11 women to receive an Olympic gold medal, an NCAA championship, a FIBA World Cup gold medal and a WNBA championship.
